First MSC cruise? What actually differs.
The things that surprise people arriving from Royal Caribbean, Carnival or NCL — with the numbers, not the vibes.

1. You book an experience, not just a cabin
This is the single biggest difference. On most lines you pick a cabin. On MSC you pick a cabin and an experience, and the same balcony sells at several prices. What changes is mostly what is bundled — and, at the cheapest tier, whether you get to choose your cabin at all.
2. Bella means MSC picks your cabin
The cheapest fare does not let you choose your location. On a 6,000-guest ship that can mean a very long walk, or a cabin under a nightclub. If location matters at all, Bella is not the saving it looks like — Fantastica exists precisely to sell you the choice back.
3. The service charge is separate, and it is not small
MSC charges a hotel service charge per person per night, billed on board. It is not included in any fare on this site, and it is not optional in the way a tip is.

No service charge for children under 2 at the time of departure. On a 7-night Caribbean sailing for two, the current rate adds $238 to your onboard account before you buy anything.

4. Drinks are packages, and prices are not published
MSC sells six drink packages. It does not publish their prices publicly — they vary by sailing and are usually cheaper pre-purchased than on board.
We do not quote a price for these. MSC does not publish one, and a number we made up would be worse than none.

- Your check-in slot is assigned by default and shown on your cruise ticket.
- Web check-in, or the MSC for Me app, gives you a digital boarding pass as a QR code.
- Yacht Club guests get a separate check-in and their own luggage drop-off where available.
- Departure and arrival times on your ticket are estimates and can change.

8. Solo travelers
MSC builds true studio cabins for one, but only on Meraviglia-generation and World Class ships. On every other class a solo pays a supplement on a two-berth cabin, and on some sailings solo booking is not offered at all. MSC is not a low-supplement line.
9. Roll calls are on Facebook
MSC has no official Meet & Mingle arrangement and Cruise Critic’s registration has been paused for years, so the roll call is almost always a Facebook group.
